Re: the ANIMATION in the last battle

For both of the competants this was their dream fight: a fight where their opponent is somebody who embodies in their eyes the ideal of a knight. A fight where they can at the same time prove their nobility as knights, and receive the peak of their happiness as knights. A fight where they are both on the same wavelength, and thus a fight that is the most fair possible. That's one half of the basis for why the animation was how it was. The other half was their focus. Because both use techniques that rely on short bursts and utmost focus, they both threw every drop of focus and energy they had in themselves in just one swing. All of this was coupled with animation that differed the two characters mostly by one color: red for Ikki, yellow for Touka. Every other color they have is gradually left behind (literally shown as the color withdrawing) in the process of their build-ups for their swings. Because they lose sight of everything else in the world, including even colors. Because they focus only on that one swing they must do in order to fulfill their ambitions and happiness. And all of this is the same for both of them. All of the context and feelings thrown in the fight, represented in an easily understood and gorgeous way by the animation. This is what animation is for.

Re: the last battle in Rakudai

A lot of what Rakudai as an anime did was concentrated around that ideal of a knight, comparable to stuff found in A Requiem for Homo Sapiens, and the last battle contains the two characters that embody this the most. In that way it's not just that Ikki is fighting... he's getting exactly the fight he wants. It's a vindication for him to do this fight, the same as for his opponent. Both are throwing everything they are in that one swing, reinforced in probably the best possible way by the animation. Both are exactly at the same wavelength, so it's the fairest possible showdown, exactly the way both of them want it. For both of them the very participation in this showdown is at the same time a proof of their knight-like nobility, and a peak of their happiness with it. Which serves as a contrast with all the previous fights in this anime, and serves to round off the main idea in a really fucking beautiful way.
But that's not all. As Ikki says, he can't just collapse. There's more to it. Besides the ideals embodied in the anime, there's Ikki's interpersonal relationships too.
And that's why we aren't shown the final strike itself. That's why he can't collapse. We need to keep the tension until that other part of the anime gets its vindication and climatic moment too.
The marriage proposal.
It's a really fucking rare thing for an anime to manage to get its action hero to do his dream fight AND to get the main couple to engage by the end of the first season. And yet the story to be not even close to over.
I want a second season.

Predictions

Kani will get drunk on her 20th birthday and jump on Hashima, complaining how she never seems to be good enough for him, then after the obvious answer from him she'll get angry that he has no right to say who is good enough for her and who isn't, storming out, with Hashima following her. Myaa will have anticipated Kani and Hashima getting together in some way, trying to get drunk herself all evening, as her tolerance seems to be quite high. She may or may not jump on Haruto; he may as well get together with his sister for reals, just so that the author trolls us. Chihiro's secret will get revealed one day, but the reaction may as well be way more normal than everybody in the cast expects.

Why must I suffer this

Just because like one third of my top 50 girls is from Negima, and just because I quite love UQ Holder too, and just because animation aside it's a faithful adaptation, I shouldn't have to do this, right? RIGHT?

Regarding Maria

Maria was fucking great. I mean, I'd heard it has accurate depiction of historical european martial arts, which is totally my fetish, but it had one more design element that I totally didn't expect. It had actual New Testament-style angels. The japs always portray the angels as either kind of bad, or as something closer to Lawful Evil than to anything else. You know, if you want to ground it in actual Christianity, you'd say they are Old Testament-style at best. But not in Maria. Power-hungry church, yes, but the angels weren't oppressors, even considering the plot of the anime.

Setting aside, though, it was a good series anyway, with decent writing and lively characters with sympathetic worldviews. Practically all of them. Maybe the sociopath monk wasn't exactly the most relatable, but he was still a decent portrayal of a sociopath. If I have to complain, it is that the first few episodes don't do much to sell the series to you. There is a huge chance you'd just skip it, thinking the HEMA will be an irrelevant gimmick, and the angels will be the same LE as everywhere else, and the story will be sugary and so on, thus concluding that there isn't much of a point in watching it, even if it isn't showing too many bad flags. But in actuality it's a nice series.

Re: Shirobako

Finally watched Shirobako. It's suffering from all the flaws I expected it to have, back when I dropped it after the first episode nearly three years ago. Frankly, it was really fucking hard to ignore Tarou, or the fake drama. No conflict, no reasonable character development, no nothing. The whole saga around the editor in the second half was simply inexcusable, and ruined any immersion or believability. You can't just slap in non-characters like the editor or Tarou and expect them to work in a cast that at least resembles human beings and has at least hint of reality to it.
But, as long as you manage to ignore the fake drama and the Tarous of the anime, it was quite the enjoyable SoL about anime production. I wish the ADs kissed at the end - you perfectly well know which two ADs I mean in particular. Smug Erika best girl. Ms Diesel also best girl. The Rec ripoff was boring. The half-words girl was funny, especially in her jealousy. There are at least a dozen of characters that left stronger impressions in me than Emi and the CGi girl. Aoi-jou was a competent protagonist. I expected her sanity to suffer more… actually, let me correct myself. I would have preferred her sanity to suffer more. I still can't understand how the fatty turned into bishie. I still remember that one time it happened in Basquash. Hiraoka was okay, he was the least fake of all the drama in this riddled with fake drama anime. The old guy was cool. But, more than any of the characters, what makes this SoL enjoyable is how you as the audience know how you'd personally react to these staffing choices. At the same time you get their slice of life from their own eyes, and you're completely aware how the whole situation looks like from the outside. Which is nice and shit. It's pretty much a must-watch for any anime fan who follows at least a little what staff makes each series. If only the writing was better, and they didn't depend on fake drama…

Pertaining to Best Girl

Asagi is completely fucking ridiculous.
What's ridiculous is not the scope of her feats.
It's the fact that the author actually understands what he's talking about, and he never undershoots or overshoots what a programmer can do - given several years and an endless bucket of talent.

Greatest idea ever #78

https://youtu.be/ldN508yT7Aw?t=3m48s
I've the greatest idea ever.

Shaft should make an anime adaptation of NieR: Automata.

Of course, the tv anime will be entirely different from the bd boxset version, but that's what always happens with Shaft series anyway.

HaCha love troubles, ver.37

[14:26:21] Reighe: the fuck are they even talking about
[14:26:31] Reighe: the dialogue and the visual clues are all over the place
[14:26:50] Reighe: first they say Hime falling for Seiji is the suspension bridge effect
[14:27:29] Reighe: but then show an entirely different side of Hime every time she concerns herself with Seiji
[14:27:48] Reighe: then they say Megumi may not be romantically interested in Blue
[14:28:01] Reighe: but they show her obviously physically and mentally attracted to him
[14:31:51] Reighe: Seiji himself shows more anger that his friend is showing interest in other people than the sadness and jealousy I'd expect if he was genuinely in love with Megumi. So if I'm to speculate somebody doesn't want to fuck somebody else, but does love that somebody else, it'd be about Seiji and Megumi, not about Megumi and Blue.
[14:35:13] Reighe: But of course the interpretation of everybody else is completely opposite. Hime is okay, because she is mentally pigeonholing herself into not obstructing the perceived romance between Seiji and Megumi, but the greek chorus of these love troubles entirely contradicts the visual clues.

Kindabad episode. I'm so totally not shipping this. And I didn't want such a chain of one-sided attraction. Also Star's finishing attack is fucking boring compared to Honey's. Why can't they give Honey to do the finishers again?

This is like an instruction manual for a Maria the Virgin Witch style anime, but in the isekai genre: the MC is a motorcyclist from our world instead of a witch. 10/10, would watch again.

*disclaimer: I'm a yukifag for over a decade already. So yes, I admit that as far as character analysis and character development goes, most of the focus on Yuki in the entire series is concentrated in Disappearance and Surprise (mind you, a lot of this focus is about post-factum constatation of development that has already happened in a previous arc, like Disappearance and Endless Eight). But, in the same time, both arcs bring out the best in the rest of the cast too, which make them really pleasant and fulfilling, both intellectually and emotionally.
